Amazing, large pair of striking red and black lacquer solid wooden shishi’gashira 獅子頭 (temple lion heads) with lovely carved and gilded details. Both lions have a very imposing expression.
The masks have subtle differences that allow them to be identified as mother with young.
The mother has broad pronounced eyebrows, wild sideburns, serrated fangs and a broadly wrinkled forehead. Her young has softer features.

A very nice thought that this mother and child have been able to stay together all this time, as most times they get separated.

Such heads were used during the traditional Japanese dance called ‘shishimai’ 獅子舞 (lion dance).
The jaw and tongue can be moved freely from the head, and the ears can be removed.

Period: Japan - Taishô period (1912-1926).

Dimensions including ears mother:
Height 35.9 cm, Width 59.5 cm, Depth 34 cm.
Dimensions including ears young:
Height 31 cm, Width 51.5 cm, Depth 31 cm.

Both are in a very good original condition with some minimal traces of wear conform age. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.

Japan's lion dance, known as shishi-mai (獅子舞), has a long tradition dating back to its introduction from China during the Tang Dynasty. Associated with Buddha's Birthday, the first recorded performance was at Tōdai-ji in Nara in 752. Commonly performed during the New Year to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits, it features lion dancers accompanied by flute and drum musicians. The dance is also seen at various festivals, with lions sometimes playfully biting people's heads for good fortune.
See the last photo for how a shishi'gashira head is worn during the dance.

When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.

Item as described. In good condition apart from one hinge on a leg became lose (one screw found, one screw is missing, but I have similar ones). But that’s fixable.
