Larimar were first discovered in 1974 in the Dominican Republic. It was used as a gemstone in the early 1980s. Because of the sea-blue color and as a tribute to his daughter Larissa, the local art expert Miguel Mendez coined the term "Larimar" (mar = sea/Spanish). When the sites along the southwest coast were exhausted, Mendez discovered another site seven kilometers from the shoreline. The blue pectolite is usually available as a cut cabochon and is extremely popular as a gemstone, future stone and healing stone.
