Step into the vibrant world of sumo wrestling with this striking nishiki-e woodblock print titled "Sadanoyama." Created by the celebrated artist Kinoshita Daimon, born in 1946 in Hokkaido, this print is a testament to the artist's dedication to the craft of ukiyo-e. Kinoshita, inspired by the illustrious Katsukawa school, taught himself in the styles of masters such as Katsukawa Shunshō and Shunei.
Upon visiting the Eihōsai workshop in 1980, Kinoshita resolved to pursue the traditional path of ukiyo-e artists, and this piece is a splendid example of his commitment. Authorized by the Japan Sumo Association and crafted using the same techniques from the Edo period by a team consisting of designated carver Kijima Shigeo and printer Itō Tomoaki, under the Kyoto Hanga-in publisher, this work symbolizes a revival of the sumo nishiki-e.
This particular print, "Sadanoyama," features the imposing figure of the legendary rikishi. Sadanoyama is depicted in a classical pose that exudes strength and dignity. Measuring 40.5cm by 27cm.
Kinoshita Daimon's contributions extend beyond nishiki-e to a range of sumo-related artifacts, including the creation of banzuke (ranking sheets), mini banners, and wrestler dolls, enriching the sumo culture with his artworks at each tournament.
Owning this piece not only means acquiring a visually stunning work of art but also a slice of sumo history and Japanese cultural heritage,
