The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is a large carnivorous mammal and is the largest bear species. It is well-adapted to life in the Arctic and is primarily found in the region surrounding the Arctic Circle, including the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas, and surrounding landmasses. Polar bears have a dense and water-resistant coat with a layer of insulating underfur. The fur appears white, which provides effective camouflage in their snowy environment. Polar bears have a layer of blubber that helps insulate them from the cold and provides energy reserves. Their small ears and short snout also help minimize heat loss.
