Necklace with winged scarab
Ancient Egypt, Late Period, 664 - 323 BC
Faience
43 cm long necklace, 11,5 cm long the scarab.
Condition: Good state, see photos.
Provenance: Ex. Private collection, R. P. (1928 - 2013), Barcleona, formed bettween 1950 - 1990. [old inventory number 3774] Thence by descent.
The winged scarab on Egyptian amulets is a symbol of rebirth, protection and connection with the divine. This motif combines two key elements of Egyptian iconography: the scarab, associated with the god Jepri and the solar cycle, and the wings, symbolizing spiritual elevation and divine protection.
The beetle, especially the dung beetle, was considered a manifestation of Jepri, the god of dawn and renewal. Its association with the act of rolling a ball of dung, similar to the movement of the sun across the sky, made it an emblem of creation, transformation and regeneration.
The wings on amulets reinforce the symbolism of the scarab, associating it with celestial flight and the soul's journey into eternity. They represent the wearer's ability to reach the beyond, protected by solar divinities such as Ra.
These amulets were used as personal protectors and in funerary contexts. Placed on the chest or heart of the deceased, they symbolized regeneration in the afterlife and the soul's ability to rise to the realm of the gods. They also served as magical emblems, ensuring daily rebirth along with the sun.
The winged scarab is a powerful synthesis of Egyptian beliefs about life, death and immortality, encapsulating the hope of an eternal cycle of renewal under divine protection.
