His Hebrew name is Simon, and the name Peter, which means "stone" in Greek, was given to him by Jesus Christ himself. App. Peter was one of the most beloved disciples of the Savior and was raised by the Lord to apostolic dignity. Peter closely followed the Savior until the day of His Ascension.
