Prince Shotoku was an imperial family member and politician of the Asuka period. He was the second son of Emperor Yomei, and his mother was Princess Anahobe no Omihito, daughter of Emperor Kinmei.
Prince Shotoku's influence on Japan was marked by his many achievements as regent under Empress Suiko, including the establishment of the Seventeen-Article Constitution and the Twelve Ranks of Caps, dispatching Japanese envoys to the Sui Dynasty, building Horyuji Temple, and spreading Buddhism. He also made a great contribution to the advancement of culture through the development of laws and diplomacy. He served as regent for Empress Suiko, and is famous for his legends, such as being able to distinguish ten voices at once.
