Paulin Lambert bought the “Trou Vaillant” residence and registered the Saint James brand with its famous square bottle.

After the Revolution and until 1820, the religious estates of the colonies were declared national property and state property.
In 1820, under the Restoration, these concession acts were cancelled by royal decree. This “return to normal” allowed a wise and enterprising man, the Marseilles merchant Paulin Lambert, to take an interest in rum production in Martinique. Saint-Pierre had become the world’s leading rum port and production began to be organised rationally. The small sugar refineries disappeared to make way for larger ones that added a “Creole” distillation column (continuous distillation).

Paulin Lambert ended up buying several “habitations” including that of Trou Vaillant. Was he already aware of the potential of the name Saint James? An English-sounding surname opened up wide horizons! In any case, he registered the brand on August 21, 1882 and personally took charge of production, demanding to control the entire chain: from the cultivation of sugar cane to bottling...

Very pragmatic, the astute Paulin Lambert, whose barrels of Saint James rum invaded the docks of the port of Marseille, favored glass bottling and chose a revolutionary format for the time: a bottle with a square base! An effective way to optimize space in the holds of ships and limit breakage. The identity of the Saint James brand was born, with its label, also registered in 1882, in the middle of which appears a caiman in a field of sugar cane.
