【Product details】
This Edo-period wakizashi is attributed to “Jumyo,” a name associated with a lineage of swordsmiths originating in the Yamato tradition, said to date back to the Kamakura period. Many works attributed to Jumyo are considered Mino-based from the Tenbun era (1532–1555) and are valued for their auspicious association with longevity, making them popular gifts among the samurai class.
The iron round tsuba features motifs of chrysanthemums and waves, symbolizing rejuvenation and resilience, respectively. All metal fittings are crafted in shakudō nanako, a technique in which a base of darkened copper alloy is decorated with tiny fish egg-like granulation for added refinement. The menuki depict fans, which traditionally symbolize good fortune and prosperity in Japanese culture.
The blade shows some scratches, minor rust, discoloration, and a tiny nick on the edge. The tip has a small scratch, and the tsuba has some rust. One of the scabbard’s metal fittings is not loose but can be moved with pressure. Please refer to the photos for more detail on the condition. The display stand shown is not included in this lot.
Length of the blade: 58.7 cm
Total length including scabbard: 67 cm
