The Fulani people (or Fula, Fulbe) are an ethnic group from the Sahara, the Sahel and West Africa, widely dispersed throughout the region. Inhabiting many countries, they live mainly in West Africa and North Central Africa, in Southern Sudan, Darfur and in the regions close to the Red Sea coast in Sudan. A large proportion of the Fulani (estimated at between 7 and 10 million) are pastoralists, and their ethnic group is the largest community of nomadic pastoralists in the world. The majority of the Fulani ethnic group is made up of semi-sedentary people, as well as sedentary farmers, scholars, craftsmen, merchants and members of the nobility.
