This exquisite set of five Meiji period fusuma (sliding door) pulls showcases intricate chrysanthemum and arabesque designs in cloisonné. The chrysanthemum, a symbol of longevity and rejuvenation in Japanese culture, is paired with the arabesque motif, which signifies eternal growth and connection, together creating a harmonious and auspicious design. Cloisonné, known in Japanese as shippō, involves applying a glassy enamel glaze to a metal surface, a technique named after the seven treasures in Buddhist scripture, symbolizing its extraordinary beauty.
The art of cloisonné flourished in Japan from the 17th century, with Hirata Dōnin in Kyoto credited for introducing and refining the technique. During the Edo period, cloisonné was used to adorn sword fittings, architectural elements, and decorative items like these fusuma pulls. These rare pieces reflect the cultural and artistic heritage of the period, encapsulated in a glass frame for preservation and display. The frame features a pane at the back that can be opened to support it, allowing the frame to stand on its own for display.
The pulls show some wear, scratches, and a patina consistent with age. The back paper of the frame has a small tear, and the original wooden box label shows some scuffing, but overall, the set is in good condition. Please refer to the photos for a detailed view.
Dimensions of the glass frame: approx. H 30.5 cm W 21.8 cm D 4.4 cm
