Vestigia Thermarum Diocletiani Ani Hodie Templem S. Mariae Angelor (1625)

Very interesting 17th century copper engraving showing the ruins if the famous Baths of Diocletian as they were in the 17th century.

The Baths of Diocletian and Maximian were situated between the Quirinal and Viminal Hills. Nowadays the ruins are just outside the Termini train station. The baths were built between 298 - 306. The baths could accommodate almost 3000 bathers at one time, almost double the number of Caracalla, though they were not much larger in area. The baths also contained gymnasia, libraries, and a swimming pool in addition to the typical cold, tepid, and hot baths.

The aqueduct carrying the water to the baths was destroyed by invading Goths in 537 AD. Parts of the structure were incorporated into other buildings. Michelangelo converted one of the baths into the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri. San Bernardo alle Terme Church, Santa Maria degli Angeli Church, and the Aula Ottagona all have incorporated parts of the baths into their structures. The cloister area is now part of the National Roman Museum.

Bella mappa conforme a quanto descritto.

Uncommon map indeed, very happy to have won the auction! Packaging fine, and fast. The actual map is darker in real life than it seemed in pictures or than mentioned in the description.
