【Product details】

This exquisite ceramic bowl from the Showa period was crafted by the renowned artist Hattotei Jinei, also known as Murata Tōen (1905–2002). The exterior features an elegant design of old pine trees rendered in gold and silver, symbolizing longevity and dignified elegance. The interior is adorned with a flock of flying cranes, also depicted in gold, silver and blue. In Japanese culture, the pine tree symbolizes long life, steadfastness, and resilience, remaining evergreen throughout the seasons. The crane is revered as a symbol of good fortune, longevity, and fidelity, often associated with peace and happiness.

Murata Tōen was born in Kyoto in 1905. From a young age, he trained as a potter to assist his family's business. At 17, he aspired to become a Nihonga (Japanese-style) painter and studied under Yamamoto Shunkyo. Beginning at 25, he intermittently worked for the Kyoto Ceramic Joint Stock Company. At 36, he started creating ceramic dolls and adopted the name "Tōen." Mastering traditional techniques of Kyō ware, he became renowned for his exceptional ceramic carving skills, producing low-temperature fired ceramic dolls (Higashiyama dolls) that were considered unparalleled. Drawing inspiration from Chinese and Japanese classics and Noh theater, he created works with a unique worldview. He was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, and is regarded as a master craftsman of the Showa era.

The base of the bowl bears the pottery mark "陶苑" (Tōen), and the original wooden box includes his signature and seal. The bowl is in excellent condition. Please refer to the photos to assess its condition.

Lot de masques noh conforme et bien emballés/protégés. Les frais en plus, VAT et dédouanement, corsent sérieusement la note (30% en plus des 9% de catawiki) mais le vendeur n'y est pour rien !
