This exquisite natsume tea caddy, crafted by Tsunode Shunpei during the Heisei era, exemplifies the finest in Japanese lacquer artistry. The piece features a black lacquer base adorned with a wave pattern (nami-nuri) and an intricate maki-e design inspired by the Tatsutagawa (Tatsuta River). Adding to its allure, the surface is sprinkled with fine raden (mother of pearl) flakes, which shimmer in hues of blue and green, creating a mesmerizing effect.

The nami-nuri technique uses lacquer to depict the movement of waves and the reflective qualities of water surfaces, enhancing the depth and brilliance of the piece. The maki-e design, inspired by the Tatsutagawa in Nara Prefecture, celebrates the river’s association with autumn foliage. This traditional motif, featuring flowing water and vibrant maple leaves, is rendered using gold and silver powders, showcasing the elegance and refinement of Japanese lacquer craftsmanship.

Tsunode Shunpei, born in 1942 in Yamanaka, Ishikawa Prefecture, is an esteemed lacquer artist recognized for his contributions to the field. His accolades include the 1985 Ishikawa Prefecture Traditional Industry Encouragement Award and repeated success in the Japan Traditional Lacquer Art Exhibitions, starting in 1989. In 1993, he was designated as a Traditional Craftsman, further cementing his legacy.

The natsume comes with its original wooden box, signed and stamped by the artist, adding to its provenance. The piece is in excellent condition, with no notable flaws. Please refer to the photos for additional details on its state.

Lot de masques noh conforme et bien emballés/protégés. Les frais en plus, VAT et dédouanement, corsent sérieusement la note (30% en plus des 9% de catawiki) mais le vendeur n'y est pour rien !
