Bird of fire, the Phoenix (Phoenix in Greek) is a noble and sacred animal, whose perfection is such that there is only one. He has no congeners or descendants. He is very independent and will never let himself be tamed.
Its main power is to be reborn from its ashes. Every five hundred years, he must regenerate his strength through fire. To do this, the Phoenix seeks a high peak, far away and isolated from everything; there he makes a nest of spices and aromatic herbs, then nestles there, then his feathers catch fire and set the nest ablaze.
Its combustion lasts three days and leaves only a pile of hot ashes. From these remains, a new Phoenix then springs. Added to this power is the power to read the hearts of men and the power to detect all those whose intentions are impure.
------
It was in the 5th century BC that the Greek Herodotus reported, from Heliopolis, the legend of Benu (associated with the solar god Ra) under the name of phoenix, which means red in Greek.
Among the Persians we find its cousin, the Simurgh which has the same powers. Among the Arabs and Indians, the Rokh is sometimes described as a cousin of the Simurgh and therefore phoenix.
Other symbols will be added over time. Among the Romans, the Phoenix was the symbol of the eternal vital force of the Empire. Certain coins were also struck with his image.
In the Middle Ages, it was one of the emblems of Christ, who died and then rose again. It is also found in Jewish tradition. He is the only bird that did not eat the forbidden fruit and received eternal life for it. In Japan, he is the elemental spirit of fire.
