Formed 15 million years ago by the impact of a meteorite striking what is now the Nördlinger Ries crater in Germany, this rare natural glass was ejected eastward into the stratosphere before falling back to Earth, primarily across the Bohemian region of the Czech Republic near the Vltava River—known in German as the Moldau, which inspired its name, Moldavite. During its rapid descent and cooling, the material solidified, producing glass with a high silica content, typically around 70–80%, along with trace elements that are unique to the impact site.

This translucent gemstone glows with vibrant shades of forest and olive green, displaying intricate surface textures often described as etched or wavy, a result of erosive forces in the atmosphere and natural weathering over millennia. Moldavite’s unique appearance and complex formation reflect the violent fusion of terrestrial and extraterrestrial materials under extreme heat and pressure, making it a prized specimen for both collectors and scientists alike, as it embodies a tangible link to Earth's ancient celestial encounters.
