First edition of one of the most important books of the 20th century. Because Camus was unknown at the time and the book was published by Gallimard during the occupation there were no grands papiers only a regular paper edition originale. 400 of these were service de presse, 500 came with no mention of an edition, and 3500 had fictive mentions of edition 2nd through 8th to suggest big demand for the novel. They were all printed in one run on 21st April 1942. The copy on offer is of the 8th variant. It has its original glassine cover, in damaged state, see images. There is a small tear to the cover left front, see images. The insides are very good. No inscriptions, no foxing, no spotting, it is much better than the other examples that we've seen over the years. Unrestored, it deserves a beautiful chemise-etui. Very rare opportunity.
