Background:
1972 was the beginning of the famous “fish eye” series; the hi-fi collection of tuners, amplifiers and receivers with the characteristic round VU meters. The quality of this equipment was high and the equipment belonged to the top class of the current hi-fi range. In addition to the popular amplifiers 22RH550 and 22RH521, the tuner 22RH651 was also an integrated device launched on the market; the receiver RH720. This powerful device united the class amplifier 22RH521 and the radio receiving unit 22RH651 in one device, expanded with modern electronic preset channel selection using the touch buttons that we also know from the record player 22GA212 and that would later also appear in the 22RH832 Quadro combi.
The 22RH720 is a high quality device; just like the 22RH521, the powerful power amplifier is fully class A. The tuner section is selective and accurate and the housing is both functional and attractive. The extensive amount of scale lighting makes this device a real eye-catcher! It is striking that there are two versions of the 22RH720, which have a few minor design differences. For example, the use of the scale lighting has completely changed in the newer version. Strangely enough, the 22RH720 never received an MFB output, while the 1974 brochure does recommend the 22RH532 MFB loudspeaker box as a reproducer.
Listening experience
As mentioned, the 22RH720 is a combination of two existing devices, namely the amplifier 22RH521 and the tuner 22RH651. It sounds as you would expect from this combination. The 22RH720 is definitely a hi-fi class device that produces a pleasant sound. However, the typical warm 70's sound is present, which colors the reproduction in a not unpleasant way.
