Large, rare granite stone garden lantern fashioned in the shape of a traditional Japanese house with a thatched roof, also known as ‘minka’ 民家. In two parts, and with nicely defined carved details.
Log beams placed on top of the thatching. When a light source is placed within, a warm glow emanates from the open door and circular window with lattice work, creating an inviting ambiance that evokes the presence of someone at home.
A minka, literally translated as "house of the people," is a traditional Japanese dwelling that embodies the country's architectural heritage. Constructed with natural materials like wood and thatch, it includes elements such as sliding doors, tatami mats, and paper screens. Originally the homes of farmers, artisans, and merchants, the term "minka" is now used more broadly to refer to any traditional Japanese-style residence of suitable age, regardless of its occupant's social status.

Height 43 cm, Width 42 cm, Depth 32 cm.
The age of these lanterns is difficult to determine. We think that this one is from the Taishô period (1912-1926). In a very good original condition with a nice aged patina on the roof. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
Shipping of this stone lantern is relatively easy. We will use a wooden pallet and good packing for safe transport.
When shipped we will also add a certificate of authenticity.
