Original woodblock print, Triptych - Kobayashi Nensan 小林年参 (act ??) - "Kagoshima Sensōki " 鹿児島戦争記 - Japan - Meiji10(1877)
His surname was Kobayashi or Furubayashi, and his given name was Eisei. He was also known by the pen names Teisai, Shinsai, Hifumioka, and Shinsai Nensan. He was a samurai born in what is now Mie Prefecture, and moved to Tokyo to become a pupil of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. His name is recorded as an assistant to Yoshitoshi from around 1874 (Meiji 7), and his works include ukiyo-e and illustrations until around 1886 (Meiji 19). In addition to producing ukiyo-e such as war scenes from the Satsuma Rebellion and genre paintings, he also worked as an editor and publisher of illustrations and books. He lived in Ginza and Sarugakucho 2-chome, Kyobashi Ward, but in around 1886, when Yoshitoshi was living in Sukacho, Asakusa, a letter (List of Yoshitoshi's Pupils) addressed to 27 pupils reads, "Kobayashi Nensan, Jinbocho, Kanda Ward." His birth and death years are unclear, but since the name "Kobayashi Nensan" appears among the "late disciples of the Yoshitoshi Society" on the monument to Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, which was erected in 1898, it is believed that he died before that time.
