Favourable and very rare armour with a beautiful combination of colours and design. The do, kotes, and sode have a beautiful striking golden colour with a great deal of patina. The beautiful kawari kabuto may be the highlight of this spectacular armour, in the shape of a sachihoko.
shachihoko (鯱鉾) or shachi (鯱) is an animal from Japanese folklore, with the head of a tiger and the body of a carp. In ancient Japan, this animal was believed to have the power to bring rain, and so temples and castles were adorned with ornamental tiles (shibi) in the shape of a shachihoko on their roofs to protect them from fire.
The kabuto is made of metal, wood and lacquer to lighten the weight of this large and unusually shaped helmet. Although it has some damage and repairs, the condition is very good for its age and the fins are gilded to match the rest of the armour. This is a very rare and coveted piece, no doubt because of its originality. Such striking armour used to belong to great daimyos who showed their power and wealth through their weapons and armour.
