Very large, rectangular lacquered tray with a raised edge and rounded corners, adorned in enchanting wakasa'nuri 若狭塗 lacquer, displaying a palette of orange, red, golden, green, brown and black hues. Sporadically embedded with a flakes of shimmering mother of pearl 螺鈿 (raden).
This lacquer technique is achieved by meticulously layering various shades of lacquer, then delicately ‘sanding down’ to create a captivating natural motif.

Length 153 cm, Width 91 cm, Height 3.5 cm.

Wakasa lacquerware (called Wakasa'nuri 若狭塗 in Japanese) is a type of Japanese lacquerware that originated in the early Edo period. It is produced in the area around the city of Obama in Fukui prefecture. A craftsman serving the Obama domain created a design depicting the beautiful depths of the sea, which became the hallmark of Wakasa lacquerware. The lacquerware is characterized by its intricate designs and vibrant colours, created through a painstaking process that involves many layers of lacquer and polishing. It is highly valued in Japan for its beauty and durability, and is used for a variety of purposes, including tea ceremonies, dining, and decoration.
