Anthony Trollope - Barchester Towers - 1857

Barchester Towers, published in 1857, is Anthony Trollope’s widely acclaimed second novel in his Barsetshire series, and it remains one of his most beloved works. Set in the fictional cathedral town of Barchester, the novel humorously explores the clerical and social conflicts that arise with the arrival of a new bishop and his ambitious wife. This three-volume set is bound in later half calf by J. D. Kennedy of Hawick, with spine labels having been renewed. The covers show noticeable wear, particularly along the edges, and the spine labels on vol one and three are slightly detached. Each volume bears the inscription of the 'Roberton Library' on the title pages, with associated contemporary shelf marks in manuscript on the front pastedowns and gilt-stamped on the spines. The pages show noticeable foxing and discoloration throughout and some corners have been folded. There is evidence of strain near the spines. Volume 1 is bound without its half-title and advertisements. This set offers a handsome and sophisticated example of a later binding, encapsulating the charm and historical resonance of Trollope's narrative world.
