Le fauci spalancate del leone mostrano i denti aguzzi dell’animale, mentre i baffi sono finemente scolpiti in rilievo.
La patina del bronzo conferisce alla scultura una tonalità ricca e profonda, mentre la lucentezza del metallo evidenzia le forme e i contorni dell’opera. Questa combinazione di patina e lucentezza contribuisce a evidenziare l’espressività e la potenza del leone ruggente.
La firma dell’artista Atsuyoshi 厚義 Maruki Company 丸喜社 si trova sotto la pancia della scultura.
Atsuyoshi è un maestro noto per i suoi studi in bronzo finemente modellati di animali. Ha lavorato per la Maruki company, attiva durante il periodo Meiji (1868-1912) in Giappone che si distingue per la finezza e il notevole peso delle sue sculture ed è considerata come uno dei migliori produttori di bronzi Giapponesi.

Queste sculture decorative sono state particolarmente apprezzate nel periodo Meiji verso la fine del XIX secolo, grazie alla forte richiesta proveniente dai paesi occidentali.
Gli scultori e gli artigiani giapponesi avevano già dimostrato la loro abilità nella lavorazione di materiali come le lacche, i bronzi e i netsuke, grazie alla loro eccellente capacità nell'intaglio e nell'intarsio. Successivamente, alcuni di loro si sono dedicati a scolpire l’avorio, corno e blocchi di legno, bosso in particolare.
Tra le scuole di scultura più importanti ricordiamo la Tokyo School fondata da Ishikawa Komei, nonché importanti scultori come Shimamura Shunmei e Yoshida Homei.
