Recently acquired this beautiful and rare antique handmade wool and cotton Samarkand possibly Khotan rug circa 1910 measuring 267 x 140 cm ( 7.8 x 4.5 ft ). The all over design having rows of Hexagonal motifs each decorated with geometric themes as well as similarly geometric borders in pale pink. peach and green colours amongst others. As seen in Samarkand rugs the influences from the west particularly on the borders of serrated leaves as well both Chinese and East Turkmen features in both central field and its paled colours. Old Samarkand rugs are extremely rare and very expensive whereas contemporary Samarkands are workshop versions of old rugs from other East Turkestan region. Originally sourced by repute, acquired from Charlotte Horstmann, Hong Kong in the 1990s, it has become one of the decent pieces in open market like eBay. Rug has been professionally cleaned and washed and have some areas of wera more concentrated at centre otherwise still extremely decorative piece with all elements of antiquity still in tact.
