A rare print from the 1860s series 'Among the Five Nations' by Utagawa Yoshitora.

Under the Tokugawa shogunate's Sakoku policy, Japan had insulated itself from the rest of the world for over two centuries. From 1854 onward, under pressure of foreign nations, Japan opened itself up to the outside world and established trade relations with Holland, England, France, Russia and the United States.

This series -- a collaboration between i.a. Yoshitora, Yoshikazu & Sadahide -- is part of the important subgenre of Japanese prints, yokohama-e. Yokohama-e were intended to depict and present to the Japanese public the unknown foreigners who had arrived on their shores. In doing so, yokohama-e artists satisfied a widespread curiosity about these 'exotic' peoples.

People from the five nations with which Japan established trade relations are depicted in the series 'Among the Five Nations' (Gokakoku no uchi). This print depicts an English couple in typical Victorian attire.

Conditions: Colours have been exposed to the sun. Two old repairs of holes near top two corners. The print appears to be untrimmed, which is rare.

Your shipment: Between sturdy cardboard and safely packaged. Track and trace and additional coverage (if bidding price permits).

Print as described. Very expensive and slow shipping.

The higher cost of shipping is that of a registered shipping, which, sadly, when sending prints to Italy, has proven to be necessary.

Very nice item and delivery 👍 absolutely reccomend.
