Artist: Hiroshige II Utagawa (1826-1869)
Title: Tsukuda Island at the Mouth of the Sumida River
Series: Thirty-Six Views of the Eastern Capital
Publisher: Aito
Date: 1862
Size: 25.4 x 37.2 cm
Condition: Some pinholes, ink stain right of the print, mount marks.

Hiroshige II ( born Suzuki Chinpei) inherited his name following the death in 1858 of his master Hiroshige, whose daughter he married. His works have often been confounded with those of his master, which they resemble closely in style, subject, and signature.

The island of Tsukudashima was known for its fishermen and its eerie sight at night, when the fire baskets used for fishing would glow in the dark, resembling the spirits of the dead that came back to life. Hiroshige II uses a similar compositional technique as his master, where he zooms in on an object in the foreground, the other elements in the design being reduced to considerably smaller sizes. The merchant boat at the bottom of the print looks like a miniature in comparison with the big boat that cuts through the print.

Quick and efficient delivery. Excellent packaging. The print was in good condition, even though the paper was thinner and more transparent than expected. Good colours and details.

Die Brexit! Verzendkosten 40euro, dus dat zal wel over douanekosten gaan, Daarom zeer teleurgesteld dat bij DHL nog 27,45 douane moest worden afgerekend. Ik zal dat bedrag aan JG auction terugvragen
