"Coraje"

Acrylics on Canvas 90.5 cm X 145 cm.

Made in Amsterdam, circa February 2024.

Courage is a complex concept.

It encompasses the ability to confront fear, adversity, uncertainty, and challenges, despite the presence of danger or discomfort.

It demands determination, resilience and a willingness to take risks in order to achieve a positive outcome. My painting invites you to ask yourself: How do you show up in a situation that requires. My painting focuses on *emotional courage*: a facet that includes facing and managing our own fears, insecurities, and vulnerabilities, often involving a willingness to be open and authentic. However we both take this concept and depict it differently. Ultimately, the game of colors, the various layers, the disoriented splash, the grid all represent the combination of self-awareness, resilience, chaos and the commitment I had in the face of adversity.

We’ve grown quite good at showing physical courage, social courage, intellectual courage or even moral courage. When is the last time you can say that you used emotional courage ? It’s probably the one - which despite any belief - requires the most strength, the most self-awareness, the most resilience and the most commitment in face of adversity, especially in our emotional connections to one another.

Meet Ellyn Bouscasse, a daring French painter making her mark on the Amsterdam art scene. Her journey began in the world of software engineering where lines of code were her daily canvas. She soon felt penned in by the fact that her days were spent behind the computer and began dreaming of expanding her horizons. In a vulnerable metamorphosis she swapped out her keyboard for brushes and paints, and hasn’t looked back since. Bouscasse explores both her darkness and inner child in her work, resulting in collections that display the paradoxes within her personality. Her raw and elegant style effortlessly provokes emotion.
