Although the records indicate that it is a short-term winery, the history of AGE begins in 1881. The Basque businessman Félix Azpilicueta founded Bodegas del Romeral in the municipality of Fuenmayor, attracted by the presence of French négociants who were looking for quality wine with which supplies the French market. Azpilicueta made enormous financial investments and built the most modern winery of his time in Rioja. The company did not stop growing while using all kinds of technical innovations imported from France that the rest of the local producers would gradually introduce. For years it established itself as one of the mythical names of Rioja along with wineries such as Federico Paternina, R. López de Heredia or the Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España, CVNE.


Azpilicueta wines were of legendary purity and extremely traditional in style. Long aging, exceeding 20 and 30 years in old American oak barrels, was the order of the day. From the first half of the 20th century we have received a handful of extraordinary and unrepeatable wines. These include the classic Age Gran Reserva from the 20s and 30s, the old reserves of the classic Siglo Saco, marketed with the now classic jute wrapper, and the legendary Fuenmayor Gran Reserva.

In 1964, the Félix Azpilicueta company partnered with the neighboring Bodegas Cruz García Lafuenta to increase its export capacity. Three years later, in 1967, the two companies merged with Melquíades Entrena, giving rise to a new large winery with the initials of these three important families of winegrowers: AGE (Azpilicueta, García and Entrena).
