【Product details】
This captivating collection of eight small Meiji period ukiyo-e woodblock prints, titled "Eight Erotic Scenes of Edo" (春色江戸八景, Shunshoku Edo Hakkei), presents intimate encounters between men and women of the era, each accompanied by a scenic view through a window that reflects a specific location in Edo (modern-day Tokyo). The title cleverly plays on the term "shunshoku," meaning both "spring scenes" and "erotic pictures," adding a witty layer to the collection's theme.
Each print features a different location in Edo, with the scenes outside the windows beautifully illustrating famous landscapes or landmarks of the city, such as temples, rivers, and bridges, creating a rich narrative backdrop for the romantic or suggestive interactions taking place indoors. The written stories beside each picture provide context, adding to the storytelling aspect and the cultural significance of the prints.
The prints are of compact size, each measuring approximately 11.3 cm in height and 12 cm in width. They are delicately colored, with the vivid hues and fine lines characteristic of ukiyo-e from this period.
Please note the signs of aging, such as wear, creases, small corner folds, some stains, and smudges. The original paper envelope shows wormholes, tears, and stains. The photos provided give a detailed view of the condition.
This set is a wonderful example of the artistic and cultural heritage of the Edo period, offering a glimpse into both the intimate and the scenic beauty of historical Edo.
Dimensions: approx. H 11.3 cm W 12 cm
