Deze kleden werden gebruikt als wikkelrok door de Kuba stam in Congo,; als prestige-object en als belangrijkste onderdeel van de bruidsschat. Ntshaks worden gemaakt van raffia van de raffia-palmboom, taai en moeilijk te bewerken materiaal dat eerst wekenlang natgehouden wordt en gekneed om de draden soepel te maken. Dit langdurige proces alsmede het weven gebeurde door de mannen - het borduren en anderzins verfraaien door de vrouwen. De vervaardiging van een Ntshak van deze afmeting kon maanden duren.
