An elegant hand crafted Louis XVI style openwork cellar for salt manufactured in 1928 by a silversmith with initials: A.L. Made of solid '835 (or higher grade) silver and gilded cobalt glass. The Netherlands, 1st half of the 20th century. Round silver base in neoclassical style, supported on three canelled feet, each with rosette in top part, connected with a band of openwork laurel leaves, garlands with medallions below, top edge modeled as a string of pearls. Lower part of feet connected with thin silver wire and a circle. Together with a deep blue glass bowl with gilding under the rim. Hallmarks: - A.L. in the rectangle: unrecognised maker’s mark; - Lion Passent with '2': 2nd standard of silver purity: .835 or more; - Minerva head with ‘M’: duty mark, letter M indicates Regional Assay Office in Schoonhoven (closed 1987); - letter 'S' in the circle: Dutch dating mark with a letter code, in this case S = year 1828. Dimensions: height – 6,5 cm; diameter - 7,0 cm. Weight (total) – 119 g; weight of silver only - 37 g. Provenance: Dutch private collection.
