De BMW 3.0 CSL is een raceversie van de BMW 3.0 CS die de Beierse fabrikant hielp om zich als sportwagenmerk te vestigen na talrijke overwinningen in races over de hele wereld in de jaren '70. Hij was vooral succesvol in het Europese Toerwagenkampioenschap en won zes kampioenstitels tussen 1973 en 1979.
Hij was ook succesvol in de beroemdste uithoudingsraces ter wereld, met algemene overwinningen in de 12 uur van Sebring (1975), de 24 uur van Daytona (1976) en drie klasseoverwinningen in de 24 uur van Le Mans (1973, 1974, 1977).
