Netsuke raffigurante Daikoku, una divinità della fortuna e dell'abbondanza nella mitologia giapponese, in una posa insolita da cacciatore di topi. Questo rappresenta un'interpretazione creativa e divertente del personaggio tradizionale.
Daikoku è accovacciato, pronto a catturare un topolino che gli corre sulla schiena. La sua posizione accovacciata suggerisce un atteggiamento attivo e deciso nel perseguire il suo obiettivo. Accanto a lui, c'è il suo martello, e una scatola per la cattura dei topi.
Firma incisa sotto la base entro tassello di lacca rossa.

Le collezioni più importanti di netsuke si trovano ormai al di fuori del Giappone acquisiti nella fine del XIX sec. ed inizio XX sec. da collezionisti Europei ed Americani in quanto i Giapponesi hanno dismesso l'uso quotidiano del netsuke a favore di una occidentalizzazione degli usi e dei costumi.
L'ideogramma del Netsuke, composto dai kanji "ne" (根) che significa "radice" e "tsuke" (付け) che significa "appendere", indica l'origine di questo oggetto. Inizialmente, il Netsuke era proprio una radice o un pezzo di legno tagliato, appeso all'obi, la fascia che stringe il kimono.
Nel XIX e XX secolo, il Netsuke divenne l'oggetto da collezione per eccellenza, con esemplari tutti diversi per soggetto, forma e materiale, che incuriosiscono e colpiscono per la loro patina e per i piccoli particolari miniaturizzati, ma soprattutto per la loro carica tattile.
Tuttavia, è importante non confondere i Netsuke autentici con le pessime riproduzioni cinesi in osso o altri materiali, che possono confondere chi si avvicina per la prima volta a questi oggetti.
Per apprezzare appieno la differenza di qualità e il materiale utilizzato, è necessario accarezzare, toccare e osservare da vicino queste piccole sculture giapponesi.
