Steven Spielberg, who was just 27 years old at the time of production, adapted Peter Venturi's novel of the same title into this blockbuster oceanic panic film. A giant man-eating shark suddenly appears in the summer sea, crowded with bathers. A young woman is cruelly devoured. Police Chief Brody appeals to the town to close the beaches, but the town's finances are dependent on summer tourism, so he is unable to get his opinion heard. Then second and third victims occur, and the town is immediately plunged into panic. Brody, along with Hooper, a young oceanographer, and Quint, a rough-and-tumble local fisherman, set out on their own to exterminate the sharks. The fear-stirring music by John Williams that plays during the shark attack scene is well-known.
