This ink inscription is by Zen Master 'Daido Nishigaki'西垣大道 (1942~), the head priest of 'Gokuraku Zenji'極楽禅寺 Temple of the 'Daitoku-ji'大徳寺 sect. Born in Hyogo Prefecture, he was ordained in 1949 under the guidance of Monk 'Soko Nishigaki'西垣宗興 (1908~1985) and trained vigorously at 'Shokoku Zendo'相国宗堂. Master Daido's calligraphy, influenced by his teacher Monk Soko Nishigaki, features strong and bold characters. The brushwork is powerful, with particularly sharp and dynamic strokes, reflecting a deep mastery of Zen. I think this piece of calligraphy is of very high artistic quality and is exquisitely completed.
The ends of this scroll are made of black lacquer.
