This exquisite incense burner from Showa era, showcases the intricate beauty of Takaoka copperware. The lid features openwork designs of autumn herbs, while the body displays detailed relief work.
Takaoka copperware traces its origins to 1611, when the second lord of the Kaga domain, Maeda Toshinaga, invited casters to establish a foundry to promote prosperity in the castle town. This industry evolved, producing exquisite bronze flower vases and Buddhist altar fittings, gaining international acclaim by the Meiji period, including at the Paris Exposition.
The base is inscribed with "鍛栄" (Tanei), indicating it was made in the Tanei workshop. The wooden box is not an original, but great for safe storage.
The incense burner shows signs of age, including wear, a rich patina, and a chip on the inner rim. Please refer to the photos for the condition.
