A fine Medieval gold ornamental attachment. The piece is tongue-shaped, with high sides and a sloping centre and features a ropework border of hatched, vertical incisions. The obverse features a low-relief repoussé floral motif. The reverse features two gold-wire pins for attachment. Good condition, some wear consistent with age. Golden jewellery was highly popular in Medieval times, worn by both men and women. It was not only a means to display wealth and social status, reflecting an intensely hierarchical and status-conscious society, but was also exchanged as tokens of love, or to ward-off misfortune. Royalty and the nobility wore gold, silver and precious gems, while lower ranks of society wore cheaper base metals, such as copper or pewter.
