Ōmu Komachi 鸚鵡小町 - unknown - Japan - Edo-Zeit (1600-1868)

Ōmu Komachi 鸚鵡小町 "Ōmu Komachi" is a Noh play featuring Ono no Komachi, an elderly woman nearing the age of one hundred, as the protagonist. In the story, the Emperor, moved by compassion, sends her a poem. In response, Komachi returns the poem with only a single character changed, showcasing a glimpse of her former brilliance. At the request of the imperial messenger, Komachi speaks about the way of poetry and performs a dance reminiscing about her past glory. The play portrays the sorrowful life of Komachi, who now lives in poverty, while maintaining an elegant and lyrical atmosphere. Along with other secret plays such as "Seki-dera Komachi," "Higaki," and "Obasute," "Ōmu Komachi" is considered a particularly important and revered work. **Yaku: Translation** "It is deeply felt that Narihira, longing for the dance of Hou-raku at Tamatsushima, traveled far, perhaps moved by the sound of that person's flute."
