A decorative leaf from a Koran dated 1590, scribed in Herat (Afghanistan), which was saved from a disbound and water damaged Koran. This leaf contains the final verses of the Meccan Chapter 52 At-Tur (Mount Our) v.35-49 and the Surah of Meccan Chapter 53, An-Najm (The Stars). The scripture talks of early deniers, the purpose of life and finally gives a warning to deniers on the day of reckoning. These final verses reassure the Prophet of God's support. The folio is divided into a top half of 6 lines of scripture in the ancient Muhaqqaq script and a lower section of 5 lines of script with the Surah to Chapter 53. Both sections are bookended with unusually decorative marginal devices marking the verses while also providing attractive mirror image illuminations. Verses are delineated with gold 'aya', divided into 6 sections by thin blue lines and having a centre red dot. There are three larger headings, one at the top, one dividing the scripture and one at the bottom. These are scripted in thicker gold muhaqqaq. The whole folio and the headings themselves are framed in thin gold linear marking and then a much thicker gold frame. A single blue frame completed the folio. It is in good condition for its age.
