"Medieval, Crusaders Era Silver Gilt Ring with Armoured Knights
Circa 12th-13th century AD
This silver gilt ring is characterised by a flat-section hoop with decorated shoulders. The large circular bezel depicts a scene of two armoured knights flanking a palm tree, symbolising the Crusaders' journey and conquests.
The Crusades, a series of medieval religious wars from the late 11th to the late 13th century, were initiated by Western European Christians to reclaim Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim control. Launched with fervour after Pope Urban II's call to arms in 1095, the Crusades involved diverse groups, including knights, peasants, and clerics. Despite intermittent successes, such as the capture of Jerusalem in the First Crusade (1096-1099), and the involvement of notable figures like Richard the Lionheart in the Third Crusade (1189-1192), the overall impact was complex.
