The Baule are an ethnic group belonging to the Akan peoples, with a population of approximately 5 million residing in Ivory Coast. Baule art is renowned for its sophistication, diversity of forms, and the laborious process of its creation. In addition to wooden masks and figures, Baule art encompasses various objects made from metals and ivory. Abundant and skillfully carved details give this Kpan pre mask used in Goli dances a strong sense of depth. In Goli dances, this type of mask symbolizes social hierarchy, and here Kpan pre represents a young woman. The mask embodies the Baule style characterized by its restrained and balanced demeanor, reflected in the serene expression of the face. Semi-closed eyes, a narrow and straight nose, and a small protruding mouth create a harmonious composition exuding a sense of tranquility. The head of the mask is adorned with a kneeling female figure holding her abdomen. Condition is good with some signs of use and two small cracks at the back.
