A large, Edo-period lacquered square offering tray, known as a Sanbô 三宝 or 三方. Lacquered in black and red, the tray 折敷 (oshiki) features high raised edges with canted corners. The pedestal foot 筒胴 (tsutsudô) has three urn-shaped openings 眼像 (kurikata), giving it the lit. name "three-way" 三方.
This stand is used in Shinto rituals to present offerings known as 神饌 (shinsen), which include sacred food, sake, and water. When placing the sanbô, ensure that the side without a hole faces the gods, while the reverse faces the people.
In Buddhist terminology, the kanji used for this stand symbolize the "three treasures" 三宝: Buddha, Dharma (teachings), and Sangha (community of monks or priests).
