Ancient Roman Silver Ring with Eagle Intaglio Circa 1st-3rd century AD This lovely silver ring is composed of a flat-section shank, widening to form a bezel. The bezel has a raised circular cell set with a stone intaglio engraved with the depiction of an eagle in flight. The eagle was a revered symbol associated with various aspects of Roman society, including military, political, and religious realms. In Roman military culture, the eagle, known as the Aquila, served as a symbol of the legion and its standard. Carried into battle, the Aquila represented the honour and identity of the Roman legionnaires. Its presence signified loyalty, strength, and the indomitable spirit of the Roman military. Beyond the military sphere, the eagle also held political and religious significance. As an emblem of Jupiter, the chief deity in the Roman pantheon, the eagle became linked to divine authority and the protection of the state.
