6 alte " Winzertischdecken ( Servietten mit Initialen R.B) - Serviette - 83 cm - 70 cm

These 6 "torchons anciens de vigneron" ( in English" very old winegrower towels" ) are direct from the champagne region and in fact from Reims and herewith the exact and a extract "Provenance" from the lady who is herself a Champenoise and is an Art Historian on "Vignerons" and Champagne. I am responding to your message regarding winegrowers' tea towels. If I understood correctly, you want to know the origin? Herewith an extract. These are tea towels found in the homes of elderly people who had vines and when the harvest was over we took out the tablecloths and tea towels which we placed on the wooden tables to celebrate the end of the harvest. I am from Champagne. Thank you so much of your enquiries. Régine. The towels go back towards the end of the 19th Century and were so much part of France's Patrimoine. By the looks of it they have hardly ever been used as the end of the "wine harvests" were (and still are) very "rowdy affairs" and the red wines which would flow freely for all the wine pickers also literally stained the towels. I have styled the towels as napkins as they deserve a more "tranquil appearance". The initials R.B. are magnificently achieved in very fine cross stitch and are hand embroidered ( see reverse photos). The "napkins" have two satin borders. The "napkins" were so much part of the wedding trousseaux and so much treasured and of course would only come out once a year. These "towels" have become very sought after, but also rare.
