Lorestan Bronze Schwertklinge
A large Luristan bronze sword, featuring a triangular blade that tapers to a point. The blade displays a raised central midrib leading to a prominently curved guard. The weapon displays a short tang, which would have fitted into the hilt of the sword (now missing). A beautiful green patina and some earthly encrustations to the surface. Minor chips to the edge of the blade.
Luristan bronze comes from the province of Lorestan, renowned in antiquity for its sophisticated metal working techniques. In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites, settled in the area. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of the Luristan bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Excavated items often included weapons, tools, and finials, as well as small amulets and fittings. Everyday objects are also found including pins and bracelets. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Luristan bronze objects often serve ceremonial functions given their funerary contexts.
Measurements: L 43.9cm x W 5.3cm
