This rare, 3-part carved granite oki’dôrô 置燈籠 (legless lantern) belongs to the Shunshôan 寸松庵 type.
Shaped after a similar lantern from Ninnaji Hitô-tei 仁和寺飛濤亭, a tea-ceremony house in the temple Ninnaji in Kyôto.
Its hibukuro 火袋 (fire box) rests directly on the ground, raised by six console-shaped feet. Hexagonal in shape and representing ka 火 (fire), it houses the light source, featuring two open panels for light insertion. The other sides with a carved relief of slats and cross-beams, as if representing a house, with two open windows shaped like sun and a crescent moon.
The 'umbrella' roof (kasa 笠), with an intricate relief design of a flower, and represents air (fû), symbolizing its proximity to the sky.
The pinnacle is the hôju 宝珠, shaped like a budding lotus and known as the ‘wish-fulfilling jewel,’ representing the void or spirit (kû 空).
Approx. dimensions:
Height 63 cm, Width 63.5 cm, Depth 56 cm.
The age of these lanterns is difficult to determine. We think that this one is from the Edo period (1600-1868).It has a great outdoorsy and aged patina by being placed outside for many a year. It is in a very good condition with an old inconspicuous chip from under the kasa. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
We will use a wooden pallet and good packing for safe transport.
When shipped we will also add a certificate of authenticity.
