Herman Brood
Herman Brood was born in Zwolle on November 5, 1946. Drawing has always been a way for Herman Brood to express his unbridled imagination from an early age and that has never changed. This fantasy has also manifested itself in his music for years, but the artist Herman Brood has been particularly prominent in the last years of his life.

Herman Brood has been playing the piano since he was 12. At the age of seventeen he left for the Academy of Visual Arts in Arnhem, where making music quickly took precedence over studying. In 1964 he started the beat group 'The Moans', with which he spent quite some time in Germany. Harry Muskee asks him
then for "Cuby and the Blizzards". Thanks to Brood, this group has had great success. In 1976 he met Koos van Dijk, who became his manager. Herman starts his own band "Wild Romance". The first single "Saturday Night" made Herman Brood a big star worldwide.

At the end of the 1980s, Herman Brood was increasingly appreciated as a draftsman, painter and even poet. While Brood mainly focused on black and white drawings in the 60s and 70s (because of his color blindness!), he now reveals himself to be a versatile genius. Bread uses various techniques. He works at a rapid pace with spray cans, hypodermic needles, felt-tip pens, paint rollers, but also regular paint and brushes. His work becomes faster, more powerful and less extensive. Details are unnecessary: with just a few accurate lines he draws eyes, nose and mouth and thus creates a striking character.

Paintings, screen prints and lithographs with few color nuances, thick lines filled with bright primary colors red, blue and yellow are typical of Brood. Brood likes to give in to his own instincts. CoBrA painters, Lucebert in the lead, are great examples: painters where a spontaneous, experimental and exuberant working method is paramount. Yet Brood has always had his own style from an early age. This is how you recognize a loaf; his work is always authentic.

During his life, his paintings were the main source of income. He also often used them as a means of payment: the tax authorities once accepted them as payment for his tax debts!

Many investors believe that Herman Brood's art is a good investment for the future. Are they right' The next century will show whether Brood's visual work has enough expressiveness and persuasive power to withstand the test of time. In any case, with the current exhibition of Herman Brood in the CoBrA museum in Amstelveen, they seem to be right for the time being.

On Wednesday, June 11, 2001, Herman Brood committed suicide by jumping from the Hilton Hotel. There was a note on his body that said: "Have a great party and maybe I'll see you again."
