An M2 molar from the lower jaw of a very large juvenile Palaeoloxodon Antiquus from the Rhine river deposits in Germany. The chewing surface is very well preserved, Most of the roots are also present , which is unusual for this species. Drying cracks have been stabilized and treated with a preservative solution.
The Forest or Straight-tusked elephant moved into Northern Europe during the interglacial period between ice ages, when the climate was warmer than today. It was a contemporary of the mammoths and distantly related to them, and to today's surviving African Forest Elephant. It was however far larger, believed to have reached up to 4.5 metres at the shoulder.
