This 5180 is a beautiful example of one of the more exceptional parlor guitars or "Jugend- or Wandergitarren" made by Höfner. The 5180 was produced between 1969 and 1981 and in contrast to almost all other of the numerous models had laminated mahagoni back and sides, whereas the standard material ised for these guitars was laminated maple.
There is black binding around the top and an attractive real wooden mosaic inlay around the soundhole.
The scale is 620 mm, the width of the nut 45 mm, and the bridge allows for the stringing of both nylon (currently strung) as well as steel strings (see the grove on the back of the bridge). Höfner initially issued its Wandergitarren with steel strings, and only later switched to nylon ones but without changing the principle construction of their guitars. Having the option to decide which style of strings is used, is a great feature in my view, sort of making it two guitars in one.
The overall condition is really nice considering its age of way more than 40 years. There is a small amount of age-related wear (see photos), but no cracks or the like. The tuners work smoothly and the chipping on the nut is only superficial/cosmetic, not affecting its functionality.
